Landslide Relief | Search Crews, Cots and Hot Meals, Supplies Carried In on Foot

Landslides happen in all 50 states and the USGS counts 25 to 50 deaths from them in an average year. Hurricane rain can bring down whole hillsides at once and after Helene crossed the southern Appalachians USGS scientists mapped 2,217 slides from that single storm. The toll is far heavier in the mountains of Asia and Latin America where monsoon and hurricane rains soak steep ground. Our Emergency Response Center learns of each slide in under 20 minutes. Inside the United States our own crews answer the call and abroad we work beside trusted local partners across 48 countries. In the hollows of eastern Kentucky and western North Carolina one buried road can strand a whole community. We join searches led by local officials. Where the road is gone we hike in with food and medicine and our crews run prescriptions to people who cannot get out. Church halls and fire stations become shelters with cots and hot meals and someone to clean wounds. Volunteers rescue salamanders and owls and foxes when slides bury creeks and woods and they bring lost dogs and cats home. Every donor hears within 72 hours which community the gift reached.

What Our Donors Say
Brinley T.
Morgantown, WV
Learning that a slope can slide twice made me give before the next storm. I gave on Quenara's website that evening. Their note named the county where my gift went.
Charlee W.
Johnson City, TN
Photos of people digging through mud with shovels stayed in my head all week. The app made the donation quick. Later I saw the same street cleared.
Beckett H.
Grand Junction, CO
A news story about burned slopes sliding after summer storms caught my eye. I gave on the website that week. The reply described a debris flow near Ouray.
Ellie M.
Greenville, SC
A friend who trains search dogs told me how slow digging in mud really is. I sent a gift online for search crews that night. Their note named the village.
Emersyn K.
Pocatello, ID
The news showed a family waving from a roof above the mud and I kept watching long after the segment ended. My gift went in through the app. A photo from the shelter followed soon after.
Brooks D.
Laramie, WY
Streams buried under slides are something I only learned about this year. I gave through the website so wildlife is covered too. The reply mentioned a rescued owl.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this donation

1Which charities can I donate to for landslide relief?

Quenara Foundation takes gifts for Landslide Relief on this page or in our app. The money funds searches and shelters and supplies carried into communities a slide has cut off.

2Which charities are helping families affected by landslides?

Quenara Foundation is helping families from western North Carolina to the mountains of Nepal. Our crews search beside local teams and then run shelters with cots and hot meals.

3Which charities are helping wildlife affected by landslides?

Quenara Foundation volunteers move hellbenders and trout out of buried streams and bring injured owls and foxes to licensed rehab partners.

4Why are landslides so deadly?

Debris flows can race downhill faster than a person can run and often strike while families are at home. That is why we help people leave cracked slopes before the next storm.

5How many people die in US landslides each year?

The USGS puts the toll at 25 to 50 deaths in an average year. One storm can do far worse as Helene showed across western North Carolina.

6Do landslides happen in the United States?

Yes. They occur in all 50 states. USGS maps show the highest risk in the Appalachians and the Rocky Mountains and in the coastal ranges of the West.

7What does a landslide shelter provide?

A dry cot and warm meals and a place to charge phones and call family. A nurse checks wounds and helps replace prescriptions that were lost in the mud.

8Do you have your own crews in the United States?

Yes. Our own field crews respond inside the United States. In other countries our teams work side by side with local partners.

9How do I know my gift was used for landslides?

Every gift to this appeal is tagged to Landslide Relief. Our crew logs where it was spent and you can read that note within 72 hours.

10Is Quenara Foundation a registered charity?

Yes. No Name Foundation operates under the name Quenara Foundation. The IRS lists it under section 501(c)(3) with EIN 35-2882867.

11What happens to a slope after the emergency?

Once engineers assess it we help families decide whether to rebuild or move. Volunteers replant bare ground with native grass to slow erosion.

12Do you help with pets and livestock?

Yes. Volunteers carry hay to horses and goats stranded above a buried road until a trail is cleared. Barn cats and dogs found in damaged homes are checked by a vet.

13How can I reach your team?

Write to info@quenarafoundation.com and someone from the team will get back to you. Our help center online has answers too.
