School Reborn: 5 Classrooms, 500 Students
More than 6.6 million children in Yemen are out of school this year. Nearly three thousand schools have been damaged or taken over for other uses. In Gaza pupils returned to classroom lessons this September after three years away and most of them learn in tents. School Reborn prepares five classrooms across the two places. In Yemen a damaged school has its roof and windows and wiring repaired. In Gaza two sturdy temporary rooms are built. Each room gets desks and a blackboard and the school gets a handwashing point. With two shifts the five rooms serve five hundred pupils. Your gift covers the materials and the builders' labour along with basic stationery for pupils. Khaled is twelve and walks an hour each way to a school on the edge of Mokha whose roof caved in during the fighting. Lessons happen in the two rooms that still stand and pupils take turns in shifts. In the hot months the rooms feel like ovens and several of his classmates have left to work at the fish market. Our local partner has chosen this school for the first repairs.
