Atmospheric Water Generators
In March this year families in Arkoum camp in eastern Chad were getting about seven and a half litres of water per person each day. That is half the humanitarian minimum. Atmospheric water units run on solar power and turn the moisture in the air into drinking water. Your gift covers the unit and the solar array that powers it along with filters and training for the person who maintains it. The first units go to fishing villages on the Madagascar coast and later ones to camp schools in Chad and health posts in Niger. A unit does not replace a well. It adds safe drinking water where people learn and get treated. Output is highest when the air is humid and lower in the dry months. Across all units the target is between three and six tons daily. Hawa is fifteen and came to Arkoum after leaving Sudan. Her mother and three younger brothers came with her. At the camp each person gets only a few litres of water a day and she is the one who queues for it. She wants to finish school. The queue often takes the whole morning. Our local partner plans to place a unit at the camp school for pupils to drink from during lessons.
