Beehive Cooperative: Income for 100 Families
River floods have swept away bee boxes and whole colonies in northwest Pakistan and erratic rain now cuts the flowering seasons short. In Bangladesh the mustard fields bloom through the winter and a few hives can bring a family real income. The Beehive Cooperative prepares one hundred families across Pakistan and Bangladesh and Jordan to keep bees. Your gift covers hives and colonies along with protective gear and a trainer who stays with the families for a season. The families come together in a cooperative where honey is extracted on a common machine and then jarred and sold as one. Income rises and falls with the season. The work still belongs to the family. As each stage of the cooperative is reached your account records the place and the date. The hive sites are shown in pictures on this page.
Fazal has kept bees near Nowshera for twenty years. River floods carried away most of his boxes and the colonies inside them. He now takes day work on building sites and keeps his last four hives on a neighbour's roof. The cooperative will set him up again and he will help train the newer beekeepers.
