Tsunami Relief | Evacuation, Shoreline Search and Seabird Care

When a tsunami warning sounds we move before the water arrives. Our Emergency Response Center follows official tsunami alerts day and night. We call our teams and our local partners on the coast and open the nearest warehouse. Most tsunamis begin in the Pacific around the Ring of Fire and NOAA places 78 percent of them there. More of them start off Japan than off any other coast and Indonesia is close behind. Island nations such as Samoa and Tonga sit right on that line of risk. In the United States the hazard runs highest in Alaska and Hawaii and along the West Coast. First we help people reach high ground. Older neighbors and families with babies and people who cannot walk far come first. When the sea pulls back we search the shoreline with local rescuers and the authorities. Bottled water and portable filters go up to families waiting on the hillsides. Tarps and blankets carry them through the first nights away from home. Our volunteers carry injured seabirds to licensed rehabilitators and look after the pets families had to leave behind. All of this runs through our own teams and local partners in 48 countries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this donation

1Which charities can I donate to for tsunami relief?

Yes. Our own teams and our local partners work across Asia and the Pacific and along the Pacific coast of Latin America. Each response starts with the local authorities.

9How will I see where my donation was delivered?
