Panama Earthquake | The First Days in Azuero

At midday on 9 October 2026 a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the Azuero peninsula in southern Panama. The shaking was strongest in Herrera and Los Santos and Veraguas. Homes cracked in Chitré and Las Minas and buildings partly collapsed near Tonosí. In Penonomé the cathedral tower was damaged. Aftershocks above magnitude 6 followed and cracked houses are not safe to enter. Water plants slowed when the power failed and drinking water is short. Many rural homes in Azuero are adobe or quincha and they suffer most in aftershocks. Our crew and our local partner were on the ground within two hours of the earthquake. In the first days they check damaged homes and move the injured and the elderly to safety. Families who cannot go back inside receive tents and tarpaulins and clean water. Ready meals and hot food come with first aid and hygiene supplies. Azuero is cattle country and families keep their dogs and cats close. Within 72 hours your account shows the province and district and the day of the response.

When the August earthquake hit I almost waited for things to calm down before giving. I felt foolish when the update put the crew on the ground from the first day.

The radio cut to the Panama earthquake on my drive home this evening and my nerves were shot by the time I parked. I donated through the app for the quake families right there.

Within 72 hours the update on my August earthquake gift named shelter as the work it covered. It went to families whose roofs had fallen in and I still picture them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this donation

1What happened in Panama?

At midday on 9 October 2026 a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the Azuero peninsula in southern Panama. The heaviest damage was reported in Herrera with Los Santos and Veraguas close behind.

2Is your crew already there?

Yes. We reached Azuero with our local partner less than two hours after the earthquake struck. We are reaching families now and organising the aid together with them.

3What does my gift pay for?

Thank you for asking. Your gift supports our crew's work in the Panama earthquake. In the first days we check damaged homes and help the injured and the elderly to safety. Families whose homes are unsafe receive tents and tarpaulins and clean water. Hot meals and food that needs no cooking go out together with first aid and hygiene supplies.

4Why is drinking water short?

The power failed after the earthquake and water treatment plants have been running at a fraction of their output. While tap water cannot be trusted we bring clean water to families ourselves.

5Are aftershocks still happening?

Sadly yes. Aftershocks above magnitude 6 followed within hours and were felt most around Tonosí. Cracked houses are not safe to enter so we stay close to families outdoors.

6Why are adobe and quincha homes at risk?

Many older rural homes in Azuero are built from mud and cane. Their walls can split easily in aftershocks so we check these homes first.

7Can I choose which family my gift supports?

We truly appreciate the thought. Needs on the ground change from hour to hour so our crew decides each day's work on site. This way your gift meets the need of that day without delay.

8What will I learn after giving?

Within 72 hours you will see the province and district in your account along with the day of the response. The task your gift covered is listed there too.

9Do you rebuild homes?

Permanent housing and repairs are led by the government's own programme. This appeal is focused on shelter and water and food in the first days.

10What about pets?

Families moving to safety are welcome to bring their dogs and cats with them. Azuero is cattle country and our crew takes care not to separate families from their pets.

11When will I receive my receipt?

Your receipt is emailed to you as soon as your donation goes through and it carries your donation number.

12Could my gift be moved to another campaign?

Your gift stays with our crew working in the Panama earthquake and is never moved to another campaign.

13Where can I donate?

You can give on our website or in our iOS and Android app. For everyone's safety we do not accept cash.

14Who can I contact with a question?

We read every message with care and reply to each one personally. You are always welcome to write to us through our contact page.
