Coral Reef Restoration | After the Bleaching

Under heat stress coral expels the algae living in its tissue and turns white. In March 2025 the Great Barrier Reef went through its sixth mass bleaching since 2016. By August 2025 northern coral cover had dropped from 39.8 to 30 percent. A Coral Reef Restoration gift buys frames and line for underwater nurseries. Permitted restoration divers and marine biologists grow fragments there and set them back on damaged reef. Tank fills and boat fuel for monitoring dives come from the same gift. Our own field team runs boat and shore logistics in Florida and Hawaii and works beside a local field partner in Queensland. Your account shows the town and the job your gift covered before 72 hours pass.

I teach a classroom ocean unit and wanted a real example. I gave on the website myself and the update named pillar coral within 72 hours.

After my California Norte fire gift I trusted the follow up. This time I chose coral restoration in the app. The note said monitoring divers had counted lobe coral that week.
Esteban
El Paso, TX
A documentary about bleached brain coral stayed on my mind for days. I donated the same weekend and the receipt was in my inbox right away.
Fiona
Waterford Ireland
I liked that divers decide which reef gets the work. My update mentioned fire coral which I had to look up afterwards.
Leonie
Freiburg Germany
I give a small amount every month through the app. I think the last update said flower pot coral but I may be wrong. It still made me read about it for an hour.
Abimbola
Croydon UK
My update named Cairns and needle coral on the nursery line. I printed my receipt for my tax folder the same evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this donation

1Which charities restore coral reefs?

Quenara Foundation funds underwater nurseries where permitted divers grow coral fragments on frames for reefs hit by bleaching. Our own team runs boats and shore support in Florida and Hawaii.

2What does a Coral Reef Restoration gift pay for?

Thank you for asking. Your gift buys frames and line for underwater coral nurseries. It also covers tank fills and boat fuel for the permitted dive team and the monitoring dives that follow.

3What is coral bleaching?

Under heat stress coral expels the algae in its tissue and turns white. Bleached coral can survive but deaths climb as the heat drags on.

4Who actually handles the coral?

Only permitted restoration divers and marine biologists touch it. Our team runs the boat and shore logistics and covers the cost of materials.

5How is coral grown in a nursery?

Small fragments from healthy colonies hang on frames under water. Divers clean them through the season. Once they have grown they are fixed onto damaged reef.

6Can one gift restore a whole reef?

Restoration takes years. A single gift funds one stage such as a nursery dive or a monitoring dive. It cannot stop ocean warming but it helps put living coral back.

7When will I hear how my gift was used?

Your receipt reaches your email the moment you give. Within 72 hours your account shows the town or district and the work your gift covered.

8Do I get a certificate or a named coral?

This listing has no adoption or naming. Your gift goes to one stage of the restoration work.

9Where does this work happen?

Our own field team works in Florida and Hawaii. In Australia and Mexico and across Indonesia and the Philippines our team works beside a local field partner.

10Does your team dive on the reef?

Our team stays on the boat and on the shore. Everything under the water is done by permitted divers and marine biologists.

11Do you work in closed reef zones?

We stay out of zones closed for protection and out of water made unsafe by a storm. Marine park rangers manage access and permits.

12Is shoreline cleanup part of this gift?

Yes for the shore beside a restoration site. Our team cleans it with local volunteers and this gift covers the equipment.

13Where can I give?

You can give only at quenarafoundation.com or in the Quenara app.

14Who can I contact if I have a question?

We are glad to help. Write to us through the contact form on our site or the support section of the app.
