Community Oven: Local Jobs, Steady Bread

In Gaza the Red Cross estimates that more than eight in ten people have no work. Even bakers are chosen by lottery for placements of one month. Many neighbourhood bakeries closed during the war with broken ovens and machines. The Community Oven repairs a closed bakery and gets it working again. The oven and dough mixer are fixed. A generator is installed. Flour and fuel come in on a steady supply. More than ten bakers and helpers are hired on lasting terms. Money from bread sales then covers wages and flour. A second bakery follows in Somalia. Your gift covers the repairs and equipment along with the first months of wages. Each finished repair stage is logged on your donor account by region and by the day it ended. Pictures from before and after the repairs are on this page.

From the Field

Hodan runs a small tea stall in Marka. Her husband baked at the town's old bakery until its oven cracked. The owner could not afford repairs. Since then the family has lived on what the tea stall brings in. Bread in the market now comes from far away and costs more. The plan with our local partner is to restore the old bakery and hire back its bakers.

“When the oven works my husband works and the whole street eats.” · Hodan

I read that most people in Gaza have no work at all. A bakery that hires ten people is a real answer. I gave towards the oven repairs.

Selling loaves cheaply but not for free keeps the bakery running after the project ends. I like that thinking. I covered the generator fuel for a month.

Opening another bakery in Somalia shows the model can travel. I sent money for flour.

The news showed families in Gaza queuing at communal ovens to bake their bread. That made the project feel urgent. I give monthly now.

Lasting jobs rather than short placements are what people there need. I donated towards the bakers' first wages.
